What To Look For In a Microwave
Not all microwave ovens are created the same – just as not all micro oven users are either! That’s why you need to think about you particular needs in choosing the unit that’s right for you. I’ve put together a HANDY BUYING GUIDE below to help you narrow down your options and find the best microwave.
Where do you want to use it?
I’ve seen good quality cheap microwaves from around $45 ranging up to the best microwaves money can buy at well over $1000. Paying more doesn’t always mean a better microwave. Size, wattage, features, and even color/finish can affect the price.
Countertop vs Over The Range
A good guideline for this is to recognize that the higher the wattage, the faster and more even the cooking will be. A 1,000-watt microwave should cook both quickly and efficiently. Microwaves with 700 watts or less are slower. They also aren’t likely to cook as evenly. I’ve had both high and lower power microwaves. You get used to working with either and can get satisfactory results if you have realistic expectations.
You want a decent selection of features and pre-sets. Automatic defrost, preprogrammed setting for popcorn, frozen pizza etc. I like a reheat button that uses sensors to figure out the cooking time based on how much steam the food is letting off. Some microwaves let you shut off the turn table. That way, if you have a dish that’s too big to rotate you can keep it stationary while it’s cooking. You also want nice big buttons that are easy to read and press.
Size matters. You want to think about how much countertop or kitchen space you have available for your new appliance. You also want to think about how you’re planning to use it. If you’ve got a family to feed you’ll want a bigger oven. In general, I’d say 1.1 cubic feet or more. They can handle larger dishes. You want a lasagna or casserole type of dish to have plenty of space. If you’re short on space, don’t worry. There are models as small as between .5 – .7 cubic feet out there. They’ll work perfectly if you just want to zap some soup or coffee.
I think a decent microwave is pretty much a necessity these days. They aren’t good at everything, but what they do well they do really well. I’ve got some great deals on excellent units here so take your pick.
